MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% year-on-year through August 2026, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours. During the same period in 2025, output was 35,935.3 GWh. The National Centre for Statistics and Information’s preliminary data shows growth in multiple governorates. This rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national total in the first eight months. In August alone, production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the highest surge, with electricity output jumping 204.8% compared to the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah saw a 44.1% increase, while Al Wusta grew by 8.4%. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose 5.5%. Dhofar also saw growth, with electricity generation increasing 4.6% from January to August. The data indicates a broad expansion across most regions covered by the national statistics.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.4% in electricity output. Musandam’s production was 376.0 GWh, showing little change from the same period in 2025. The regional figures reveal significant variation in electricity growth across Oman. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classifies these figures as preliminary. The data covers electricity output through August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity production grew 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh, up from 34,871.8 GWh a year earlier. This figure includes regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led the growth, with net production rising 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar posted gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output rose by roughly 1,592.1 GWh year-on-year.
Net electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased 5.4%. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah saw a 16.6% decline. Musandam’s net production was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from 2025. The regional data largely follow the trend seen in total electricity figures. Despite fluctuations, national net output remained above the levels recorded in the first eight months of 2025.
Water production drops across Oman in 2026
Oman’s water output declined 3.5% through August 2026, reaching 330.65 million cubic metres. In the same period of 2025, production was about 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat’s water production fell 6.2%, down to approximately 128.07 million cubic metres from around 136.57 million. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease, with output dropping to about 149.90 million cubic metres from 155.19 million last year.
Dhofar was the main exception. It produced roughly 52.68 million cubic metres, up 3.4% from about 50.94 million in 2025. These latest utility figures reveal contrasting national trends for electricity and water in the first eight months of 2026. Electricity output increased overall at both total and net levels. However, water production remained below its 2025 comparable period.
