UAE and France hold talks on regional stability

ABU DHABI: Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs, held talks in Abu Dhabi on Thursday with French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, with the two sides reviewing bilateral ties and the latest regional developments. The meeting brought together two senior officials from countries that have maintained close political, security and economic links, as Gulf tensions and maritime security concerns continue to shape diplomatic activity across the region.

The talks also carried a clear security dimension. During the meeting, Barrot reaffirmed France’s solidarity with the UAE and its support for measures to protect the country’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, as well as the safety of citizens, residents and visitors. That message came as the Gulf remains on alert after recent attacks on civilian infrastructure in parts of the region and amid continued concern over the impact of the crisis on trade routes, energy markets and wider regional stability.

The Abu Dhabi meeting fits into a wider burst of regional diplomacy involving Gulf, European and international officials in recent weeks. The Strait of Hormuz has become a central point of concern, with shipping and energy flows under close scrutiny because the waterway handles about one fifth of global oil and gas supplies. That has elevated foreign minister contacts beyond routine bilateral coordination and placed greater emphasis on navigation security, de escalation efforts and the protection of strategic infrastructure.

UAE regional security talks gain prominence

France has been actively involved in discussions on maritime security linked to Hormuz. Earlier this year, French officials said Paris had approached around 35 countries as it sought ideas and partners for a future mission to help resume shipping through the strait once conditions allow. France and Britain later chaired a larger meeting with dozens of countries on possible preparations for a defensive effort focused on freedom of navigation, highlighting the breadth of international concern over the disruption.

That wider effort was still evolving when Barrot met Sheikh Abdullah in Abu Dhabi. The United States has also been seeking international support for a separate initiative aimed at restoring navigation in Hormuz, while Barrot has said such a move would complement rather than compete with the French and British track. Against that backdrop, the Abu Dhabi talks underscored the UAE’s role as a key regional interlocutor as outside powers intensify consultations over security, shipping and the economic fallout from continued tension.

    Broader partnership remains in focus

The meeting also reflected the longer arc of France-UAE relations, which extend beyond the immediate regional crisis. Paris and Abu Dhabi have described their relationship as a strategic partnership, and the two countries have kept a steady rhythm of high level exchanges on political, economic, technological and security issues. In March 2025, the two foreign ministers met in Paris and discussed subjects including artificial intelligence, judicial cooperation, Gaza and Ukraine, illustrating how the relationship spans both regional and global files.

Thursday’s talks added another layer to that coordination at a moment when diplomacy in the Gulf is increasingly tied to questions of security, maritime access and economic resilience. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the meeting reviewed bilateral cooperation and regional developments, while the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has been engaged in parallel contacts across the region. With tensions still reverberating across the Gulf, the Abu Dhabi meeting signaled continued diplomatic engagement between two partners seeking to manage an unsettled regional landscape. – By Content Syndication Services.
