OpenAI Extends Free Access to ChatGPT with New GPT-5.6 Luna for Users

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening the availability of ChatGPT for Free and Go users by making GPT-5.6 Luna the default model. The company announced that unlimited text chats will be available starting next week, with safeguards in place to prevent misuse. Additionally, free users will gain a Think button for questions requiring deeper reasoning. Limitations will still apply to file uploads, image generation, and other features. These updates were revealed by OpenAI on August 6 as part of a larger update to ChatGPT.

During this week’s rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will serve as the default model for Free and Go accounts. Unlimited text conversations and the Think button will be introduced next week. The Think feature allows Luna extra time to handle more complex questions before responding. OpenAI emphasized that unlimited text access will still be protected by abuse prevention measures. This change impacts only text conversations, so separate restrictions will remain for tools that require additional processing.

This expansion occurs as ChatGPT continues to serve a large global user base across diverse tasks, from everyday activities to professional work. OpenAI reports that one billion people use ChatGPT weekly for searches, planning, research, writing, and more. The GPT-5.6 model family was launched in July, including Sol, Terra, and Luna. Luna is positioned as the fastest and most cost-efficient among them. The recent update puts Luna at the core of the standard experience for users on Free and Go plans.

Paid plans get upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro now have access to an updated GPT-5.6 Sol for daily interactions. Sol now powers both quick replies and more in-depth reasoning for these users. OpenAI states that the update offers more targeted responses and reduces unnecessary details when simple answers suffice. Plus and Pro members also get a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop. This feature allows users to control how much processing ChatGPT applies, particularly for research, planning, writing, and coding tasks.

OpenAI also reports improvements in factual accuracy based on their internal tests. The evaluation focused on financial, medical, and legal prompts that require factual details. Responses with at least one factual error were about 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. The company states that the updated Sol model also handles dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions more reliably when those details influence an answer.

New access features safety measures and tool restrictions

OpenAI highlighted that its latest models include added protections for users under 18. The systems are trained to avoid romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could replace real-world relationships. They also include boundaries for content related to sex, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. OpenAI added new assessments for responses involving younger users. The unlimited text feature will still operate within the company’s safeguards against abuse when it becomes available to Free and Go accounts.

This update pertains specifically to the main ChatGPT chat experience. The GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex are not changing with this release. Paid subscribers can access the updated Sol model and reasoning slider now. Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week, with unlimited text chats and the Think button coming next week. File uploads, images, and other tools will continue to have separate limits, even after unlimited text messaging is introduced.
