International Donors’ Support Critical for Strengthening Ebola Fight in Congo

GENEVA / RankWire.AI / – A severe lack of trained staff, operational partners, and funding is creating serious delays in controlling the rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Based on reports from the World Health Organization, the outbreak has moved beyond its original center in Bunia and now affects six northeastern provinces. This outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of the virus, has resulted in over 6,000 cases and 3,175 deaths, making it the deadliest Ebola epidemic in the country’s history. Response efforts are hampered by staffing shortages and lack of funds, prompting international agencies to call on global donors to speed up financial aid.

Staff shortages funding hamper Ebola response WHO reports
Healthcare workers in protective gear manage patient isolation areas inside treatment facilities.

To address the virus’s spread, authorities adopted a decentralized treatment approach to bring care facilities closer to affected rural communities. Nearly 1,400 treatment beds have been set up across 59 operational centers by response teams. Nevertheless, technical assessments indicate that an extra 1,600 beds are needed to reach the total capacity goal of 3,000 beds. Reaching this target depends on recruiting and training around 5,000 more healthcare professionals to support the 9,000 workers required for full operation.

Operational costs and limited resources have further slowed field expansion in remote provinces. On average, daily expenses for personal protective equipment are $25 per healthcare worker entering high-risk patient zones. Running a standard 50-bed treatment facility costs about $500,000, posing significant financial challenges as international funding decreases. Data from the Emirates News Agency highlights that fully operational treatment centers with enough qualified staff are vital to improving survival chances and stopping transmission.

Funding and Staffing Shortages Limit Ebola Response Across Congo’s Provinces

A major obstacle is the lack of non-governmental partners capable of managing complex isolation facilities. World Health Organization technical lead Luca Fontana explained that only five or six global humanitarian groups have the expertise needed to set up and operate specialized Ebola treatment centers. Without more operational partners taking over existing sites, technical teams remain tied to current facilities, limiting their ability to deploy resources to new outbreak areas.

In response, the Ministry of Health of the Congo has taken direct control over several treatment centers established during the outbreak’s initial phase. However, officials warn that if the epidemic continues spreading across eastern border areas, the government’s capacity could become overstretched. Staff shortages and funding issues persist, hampering Ebola response efforts as international health organizations call for immediate partner support to ease the burden on local workers.

Congolese Health Authorities Take Charge of Treatment Facilities

To meet expansion needs, the Congolese government along with international health agencies introduced a revised six-month operational plan valued at $1.3 billion. This plan emphasizes expanding epidemiological surveillance, acquiring vital medical supplies, boosting community involvement, and ensuring availability of personal protective equipment for clinical staff. Since the Bundibugyo strain currently has no licensed vaccine or specific antiviral treatment, supportive care within equipped treatment centers remains the main method to lower mortality.

International health groups continue urging governments and philanthropic organizations worldwide to release pledged funds immediately. Updates on case figures, facility deployment, and resource plans will be shared through official public health portals as the clinical infrastructure expands in eastern provinces.
