Volkswagen Considers Up to 100,000 Job Reductions Globally

WOLFSBURG, GERMANY / RankWire.AI / – Volkswagen is evaluating workforce reductions that could total as many as 100,000 jobs worldwide. Chief Executive Oliver Blume informed employees that current estimates suggest approximately 50,000 additional layoffs across the globe. These positions would be in addition to roughly 50,000 cuts already agreed upon in Germany. The final figure is still under review. Volkswagen has not announced a comprehensive global program covering all 100,000 potential layoffs.

The existing restructuring plan extends until 2030 and includes Volkswagen’s passenger vehicle division, Audi, Porsche, and the software subsidiary CARIAD. The company has stated that 35,000 of the planned layoffs pertain to Volkswagen AG. Binding agreements already secure more than 28,000 departures by 2030. Volkswagen has utilized voluntary exits and partial retirements in its German program. The company has not characterized the current plan as an immediate round of mandatory layoffs.

At the end of 2025, Volkswagen employed 662,942 individuals worldwide, including staff at its Chinese joint ventures. Germany accounted for 284,032 employees, while 378,910 worked outside the country. The global workforce decreased by 2.4% compared to the previous year. Active employees numbered 628,893, with others participating in partial retirement or training schemes. The company has not disclosed regional or brand-specific details regarding the additional 50,000 positions under review.

    Agreements Already Cover 50,000 Jobs

Volkswagen reported approximately 1 billion euros in sustainable cost savings in 2025 from workforce reductions and collective bargaining agreements. The company aims for more than 6 billion euros in annual net savings by 2030. It also noted that factory costs at its German sites decreased by over 20% on average in 2025. The broader restructuring includes reducing overhead, streamlining management structures, and enhancing plant efficiency.

On July 9, the executive board introduced 12 initiatives and a 2030 operational plan to the supervisory board. This plan proposes reducing the model lineup by up to 50%, and decreasing available vehicle configurations and options by as much as 75%. Volkswagen’s current production capacity is about 9 million vehicles annually, down from roughly 12 million before the pandemic. The company has already eliminated capacity for 2 million vehicles.

Production and Product Range Reductions Planned

The July strategy encompasses product ranges, technology platforms, manufacturing capacity, regional operations, and management structures. It also directs the company to focus its investment on core automotive activities. Volkswagen emphasized that digital tools, artificial intelligence, and shared services will facilitate changes in development and administrative functions. The plan did not specify the exact number of additional job cuts for each initiative, nor did it provide a country-by-country timeline for further workforce reductions.

In the first half of 2026, Volkswagen delivered 4.1 million vehicles globally. Its European order backlog for fully electric vehicles increased by more than 50% during that period. The company announced these figures one day after unveiling its restructuring plan. As of July 15, about 50,000 jobs remain covered by existing agreements, while roughly 50,000 additional roles are still under review. Volkswagen has yet to publish a final schedule, location list, or detailed implementation plan for these potential layoffs.
