BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN / RankWire.AI / – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Bishkek during the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit. Their meeting took place on August 31 and focused on topics like political relations, trade, defence, energy, space, mobility, and people-to-people contacts. Modi and Putin also discussed regional conflicts and how to collaborate through major multilateral platforms. This was their first face-to-face encounter of 2026 and continued a series of high-level discussions between India and Russia.

India-Russia ties lead Modi-Putin talks at SCO summit
Modi and Putin discuss India-Russia ties during high-level talks in Bishkek.

The previous meeting occurred in New Delhi at the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in December 2025. During their latest dialogue, they examined progress under the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership that shapes their bilateral relations. India and Russia work closely across various sectors including energy, defence, technology, and space. Both governments also aim to enhance trade and investments, addressing challenges such as logistics and payment systems that impact their commercial cooperation.

Modi and Putin expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. This commission met in Moscow on August 24, just days before the Bishkek summit. The two nations aim to reach $100 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030. According to Indian government data, bilateral trade hit $59.86 billion in the 2025-26 financial year, with Russian exports to India making up most of this total.

Diplomacy and dialogue remain key in resolving conflicts

Regional security was a major topic during the talks. The leaders shared perspectives on conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea area. India noted that these conflicts have disrupted maritime trade and posed risks for Indian seafarers. Modi emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy should guide conflict resolution. He also called for an end to prolonged warfare and reaffirmed India’s support for peace efforts during his remarks with Putin.

The leaders also discussed their countries’ roles in BRICS, which India chairs in 2026. Modi told Putin that India eagerly awaits his visit for the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13. This summit offers another platform for India and Russia to engage with other BRICS members. The Bishkek talks came less than two weeks before the India-hosted summit and followed multiple bilateral meetings over the past year.

India and Russia strengthen their strategic alliance

Modi and Putin agreed to stay actively engaged as both nations work to deepen their partnership. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that their relationship continues to grow despite global geopolitical uncertainties. Their cooperation spans key sectors like defence, nuclear energy, and space, along with trade, fertilisers, innovation, and mobility. Energy remains a vital part of their commercial ties. Both sides are also working through government mechanisms to broaden economic cooperation beyond current areas.

The Bishkek meeting linked bilateral economic efforts with international conflict issues. It also reinforced regular contact between Modi and Putin ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit in India. Their discussions covered regional challenges, long-term trade objectives, and cooperation within international institutions. With the September summit nearing, India-Russia relations focus on expanding practical collaboration while maintaining dialogue on conflicts impacting trade, security, and citizens abroad.
