NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, U.S. stocks edged higher, driven by a sharp decline in long-term Treasury yields. The S&P 500 increased by 16.22 points, or 0.21%, finishing at 7,707.98 and breaking a three-day losing streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 119.65 points, or 0.22%, closing at 53,463.05. The Nasdaq Composite rose by 41.38 points, or 0.16%, ending the day at 26,331.09. The drop in government bond yields helped major indexes recover after recent pressure from rising borrowing costs.

Bond prices rose after the U.S. Treasury Department announced increased liquidity support through larger buybacks of longer-term government debt. Starting September 9, the maximum purchase size will be raised from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. This change applies to nominal coupon securities in the 10-to-20-year and 20-to-30-year sectors. The higher amounts will be in effect until November 4. The department stated that strong demand for high-quality offers motivated the decision to expand liquidity operations in these sectors.
Following the announcement, Treasury yields declined, reversing part of their recent upward trend in long-term borrowing costs. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped to around 4.65%, while the 30-year yield fell to about 5.20%. On Tuesday, the 30-year yield reached 5.337%, its highest level since 2007. Bond yields move inversely to prices, so increased demand for government debt pushed yields lower. This retreat eased some of the pressure caused by the recent selloff in longer-term government bonds.
Healthcare Stocks Boost Market Performance
Healthcare shares added further support to Wednesday’s gains. Several pharmaceutical companies posted large increases. Moderna shares soared by 177%, while Merck gained 12.6% after announcing positive results from a Phase 3 melanoma trial. The INTerpath-001 study tested personalized mRNA therapy intismeran autogene with Keytruda after high-risk melanoma surgery. The trial met its primary endpoint for recurrence-free survival and also achieved a key secondary endpoint measuring survival without distant cancer spread.
The rally in healthcare stocks helped offset mixed trading elsewhere, especially in the technology sector. Consumer stocks also contributed as several major firms released quarterly results during the session. Estée Lauder rose more than 16% following its earnings report, joining other consumer companies higher. Target and Lowe’s also advanced after reporting their latest financial results. Smaller companies outperformed large caps, with the Russell 2000 up about 0.5% as the broader market recovered.
Indexes End Three-Day Losing Streak
Wednesday’s gains marked the end of three consecutive losing sessions for the S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq. The recovery followed earlier week pressure from rising long-term yields. Despite Wednesday’s positive move, the indexes still closed lower for the week. The S&P 500 was about 1% below last Friday’s level. The Dow declined roughly 0.5%, and the Nasdaq was about 1.5% lower.
Looking at the broader year-to-date performance, the market remains positive. The S&P 500 has gained roughly 12.6% since January 1. The Dow has increased around 11.2%, while the Nasdaq is up approximately 13.3%. Wednesday’s session helped lift all three indexes modestly, thanks to falling Treasury yields and strong healthcare gains, signaling a recovery for Wall Street despite recent bond market pressures.
