Italy Implements Mandatory Reservation System for Popular Beaches

ROME, ITALY / RankWire.AI / – As summer tourism peaks across southern Europe, visitors are now required to pay fees to reserve slots at well-known Italian beaches in response to emerging environmental conservation efforts. Municipal authorities in Sardinia, Liguria, and Puglia have established compulsory online booking platforms to control daily visitor numbers. The Italian National Institute of Statistics reports a 4.2 percent rise in tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2026, which has placed unsustainable pressure on delicate coastal ecosystems.

Italy introduces mandatory booking slots for popular beaches
Coastal municipalities implement digital visitor management systems to preserve natural habitats

Under the new local regulations, tourists are limited by daily entry quotas and designated visiting hours at several renowned seaside spots. On Sardinia, municipal councils have set strict capacity limits, ranging from sixty to 3,352 visitors per day. La Pelosa beach in Stintino, a famous destination, restricted daily access to 1,500 visitors between June and September. Entry requires online registration, a fee of €3.50, and a digital check-in via a mobile device. Authorities confirmed that all booking slots for La Pelosa have already been fully booked through mid-September due to high international demand.

Environmental groups have supported reservation systems as a measure to safeguard fragile marine habitats from damage. Legambiente representatives highlighted that unmanaged tourism causes rapid erosion and permanent harm to vulnerable coastal dunes. At La Pelosa, environmental monitors observed that thousands of bathers daily inadvertently remove tons of sand with towels and footwear each year. In response, local officials implemented a strict mat policy, imposing €100 fines on anyone placing towels directly on the sand. Additional restrictions prohibit removing shells, pebbles, or sand, with penalties up to €5,000 for violations.

Local authorities set daily limits on delicate coves

In eastern Sardinia, similar booking systems now regulate access to several world-renowned shoreline attractions. Baunei municipality has established a maximum of 250 visitors daily for the UNESCO-protected Cala Goloritzé. Visitors must reserve their spot up to three days in advance via a dedicated mobile app and pay a €7 entry fee. Nearby coves, such as Cala Mariolu and Su Sirboni, also have caps of 700 and 786 visitors per day respectively. On-site verification is carried out by staff using digital barcode scanners at trailheads and boat docks.

Across mainland Italy, coastal locations have adopted similar reservation systems to prevent overcrowding during peak periods. In Liguria, Sestri Levante has introduced a cap of 450 visitors per day for the Baia del Silenzio. While the bay remains free to access, visitors must register online ahead of time during busy hours. Meanwhile, southern regional tourism authorities, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, have established guidelines to ensure consistent enforcement. The goal is to allow public access while protecting the environment across all coastal areas.

Fines and mats help preserve fragile sand dunes

The introduction of paid reservation schemes has sparked discussions among local businesses, hospitality sectors, and international travel agencies. While environmental advocates see visitor limits as vital for sustainability, some beach club operators and local commercial entities worry about potential revenue loss. Data shows that about 33 percent of Italy’s coastline is managed by private concessionaires offering umbrellas and loungers. However, municipal authorities emphasized that systematic crowd control is critical to ensuring safety, avoiding blockages during emergencies, and conserving natural coastal features for future generations.

As overtourism continues to challenge the Mediterranean region, authorities anticipate expanding digital access controls. Tourists booking slots and paying fees to visit Italian beaches are advised to plan months ahead and verify local regulations before traveling. Official tourism portals now offer real-time capacity updates and booking links. The Italian National Tourist Board confirmed that monitoring will persist throughout the summer to ensure adherence to fee payments, equipment rules, and daily visitor limits.

    September 5, 2026

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – In a historic effort to improve map accuracy, the United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution backed by the African Union. This resolution calls on international organizations and educational systems to phase out distorted world map projections. The move addresses long-standing criticisms of the 1569 Mercator projection, which enlarges landmasses at high latitudes and shrinks those near the equator. By officially endorsing equal-area alternatives, the assembly hopes to align modern mapping practices with true geographic proportions and reduce Eurocentric biases that influence global communication.
