Indonesia’s B50 Biodiesel Mandate Expected to Save US$10.8 Billion in 2026

JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – Indonesia’s compulsory B50 biodiesel program is forecasted to conserve approximately 170 trillion rupiah, equivalent to US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This projection accounts for reduced expenditures on imported diesel resulting from the country increasing its national biodiesel blend. The initiative mandates that diesel sold across the country contain 50% biodiesel derived from palm oil. Officials highlighted that this policy boosts domestic fuel consumption while diminishing the reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia B50 biodiesel to save US$10.8 billion in 2026
Indonesia’s B50 biodiesel mandate raises renewable fuel use and cuts diesel import needs.

Indonesia implemented the nationwide B50 biodiesel blend on July 1 and officially announced the mandate on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. This new blend replaces B40, which contained 40% biodiesel and became the national standard in 2025. B50 comprises equal parts of fatty acid methyl ester, also known as FAME, and conventional diesel. The renewable component is supplied by palm oil, linking the fuel program to Indonesia’s local plantation and processing sectors.

The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion estimate with Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings under B40. It also forecasts that B50 will decrease fossil diesel consumption by approximately 4 million kilolitres. The government tasked state-owned Pertamina with managing the blending process and supporting distribution throughout the national fuel network. Fuel suppliers are permitted to utilize remaining B40 inventories through September as the transition to the higher biodiesel blend is finalized.

B50 Policy Promotes Increased Use of Palm-Based Fuel

Indonesia anticipates that B50 demand will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. The initiative will also utilize an estimated 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 scheme for 2026. The increased mandate directs more domestically produced palm oil into transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, rail systems, and electricity generation.

Official projections estimate the added value for the crude palm oil sector at 23.49 trillion rupiah. The assessment further states that B50 could support roughly 2.1 million jobs across agriculture, processing, logistics, and fuel distribution. The ministry also estimates that the blend could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes in emissions reductions projected with B40.

Extensive Testing Supports the Transition to B50 Diesel

Prior to the implementation, the government conducted tests of B50 in various vehicles, including cars, trucks, mining equipment, agricultural machinery, trains, ships, and power stations. Automotive testing involved over 50,000 kilometers for lighter vehicles and more than 40,000 kilometers for heavier ones. Mining machinery was tested for around 1,000 operating hours, with no significant engine issues linked to fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel met government standards and the technical specifications required by vehicle manufacturers.

Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel mandate over almost twenty years. It started with B2.5 in 2008, then B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, followed by B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025, before moving to B50 this year. Each escalation has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, production capacity, storage, transportation, and distribution infrastructure to support nationwide adoption.
