South Korea’s Arctic Shipping Trial Opens New Opportunities for Exporters to Europe

BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA / RankWire.AI / – South Korea has initiated its first container ship voyage through the Arctic to reach Europe. The vessel, the 2,758-TEU PanStar Acro, departed from Busan New Port around 9 p.m. on August 22. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries verified the departure and issued the schedule for the trip. The ship plans to travel via the Northern Sea Route before stopping at three European ports. The entire round trip, expected to take 45 days, is set to conclude back in Busan on October 5.

South Korea launches Arctic container ship trial to Europe
South Korea’s Arctic container trial links Busan with major European ports.

PanStar Line Dot Com manages the vessel, which is carrying 837 TEU during this Arctic shipping test. Of this, approximately 737 TEU is commercial cargo, such as chemical products, used vehicles, and automotive parts. The load also includes 100 empty containers. Officials expect the ship to reach Arctic waters around August 30 and complete the Arctic segment roughly by September 7. The Arctic portion of the voyage covers about 6,400 kilometers, according to estimates.

The vessel is scheduled to dock at Felixstowe in the United Kingdom on September 9, as per the official plan. Rotterdam in the Netherlands is next on the list, with a scheduled arrival on September 11. Gdansk in Poland is set for September 15. After completing the European stops, the ship will return to South Korea via the same Arctic route. The distance from Busan to Rotterdam on this route is roughly 13,000 kilometers. Throughout the voyage, data related to operation and efficiency will be collected.

Commercial cargo set to reach Europe during trial

Before departure, the captain and navigation officers underwent specialized training for polar waters. An experienced polar navigator, who has previously served aboard South Korea’s Araon icebreaking research vessel, joined as the chief officer. Preparations also included securing insurance, establishing emergency procedures, and completing administrative tasks for the voyage. Authorities coordinated with relevant countries and organizations beforehand. During the Arctic crossing, a 24-hour communication system will ensure continuous contact with the ship.

This voyage marks South Korea’s first container ship trial along the Northern Sea Route. While Korean shipping companies have previously operated bulk carriers and tankers on Arctic routes, this is the first such attempt since 2016. Unlike previous tests, this voyage carries actual commercial cargo. The test aims to gather technical, environmental, and commercial data related to Arctic container shipping.

Operational data collection for northern route underway

Preparations for the trip started earlier in 2026 through a public-private Arctic shipping council. The carrier was chosen through a public competition held in May. Preparatory work included vessel readiness, cargo arrangements, crew planning, insurance, and emergency protocols. Administrative procedures for international navigation were also completed. These steps took place before the vessel’s departure from Busan in August, heading through Russian northern waters.

The government considers this voyage a trial, not a regular service. During the round trip, officials will gather data on sailing distance, travel time, fuel use, and operating costs. The project also aims to assess cargo demand and other practical needs for container shipping via the Arctic. The scheduled European stops will facilitate both commercial cargo transport and navigation testing. The PanStar Acro is expected to return to Busan New Port around October 5, completing the planned 45-day journey.
